When you are plagued by insomnia or anxiety, the lecated blanket is a concrete solution to find sleep more easily. Also suitable for children with special needs, this heavy duvet promotes falling asleep. Decryption.

According to Inserm, between 15 and 20% of French people are subjected to the scourge ofinsomnia. To respond to these difficulties of falling asleep, nocturnal awakenings or waking up too early, there is of course a slew of medications, from sleeping pills to melatonin. But in recent years, a new product has become more and more prominent on the shopping list of insomniacs and other anxious: the heavy cover. A duvet or heavy blanket, which thanks to pressure on the body, would release hormones lowering stress and promoting sleep. What is this device really worth? Two sleep professionals, Kelly Champinot and Juliette Moudoulaud, as well as Nicolas Marquis, founder of Wake Up Serenity, which produces heavy duvets, respond.

What is a peddled blanket?

« The duvets are lighted by thousands of glass microbeads. These are compartmentalized in squares of about 10 cm x 10 cm, so that the weight of the cover on the body is perfectly distributed,”explains Nicolas Marquis, before clarifying that“the pressure exerted on the body allows the body to calm down and relax. These blankets are listed as a real therapeutic tool in some European Union countries. A product that the French entrepreneur is now marketing after a burn-out and nearly three years on anxiolytics and antidepressants, leading him to think that if the drugs relieve, they do not cure. This is how he turned to a more natural solution: heavy duvets.

To maximize results, choose coverage that weighs about 10% of your body weight. For example, if you weigh between 70 and 90 kilos, opt for a duvet around 8 kilos.

How does a heavy duvet work?

With weight, the cover then creates a pressure stimulation to the touch, or Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) stimulation. Kelly Champinot, sleep consultant, explains: “DTP promotes the secretion of hormones such as serotonin (a hormone that regulates mood in particular) or ocytocyne (a hormone that promotes relaxation and appeasement), which play a key role in the regulation of sleep. Consequence? This hormonal cocktail promotes the secretion of melatonin (sleep hormone) and thus makes it easier to find sleep. »

According to a study published by the academic publishing house Taylor and Francis, out of 32 adults subjected to the experiment, 63% of them reported less anxiety following the use of a lean blanket.

Who is this device for?

Juliette Moudoulaud, sleep coach in adults and children, has already prescribed the lean duvet to her patients. “For adults, it can be interesting to use it during a transitional period, when there are particular events. It is then a one-off aid, which does not necessarily fit into the long term. Indeed, for our expert, using such a device at home every night can also mean that we will come to be unable to sleep without. According to her, it is better to try to sleep with as little help as possible, to maximize the chances of restful sleep.

On the counter-indications side: the skinned blanket should not be used in pregnant women, people with type 2 diabetes,or those unable to easily remove coverage.

At what age can weighted coverage be tested?

The low-fat blankets are usually recommended from 3 years old. Sleep consultant Kelly Champinot says, however, “I won’t recommend her for another 3 years and a minimum of 20 kilos, making sure the child can remove the blanket on her own. Beforehand, it is essential to check that the child is healthy and that his sleep hygiene is good, because let’s not forget that a child who is very agitated or having difficulty falling asleep at night often means that he lacks sleep. Nicolas Marquis also points out that for optimal use, it is recommended that the experiment be done under the close supervision of an adult. “Forexample, you can put your child to sleep covered with his heavy blanket to soothe him at the time of sleep and remove him once he is asleep,” he explains. Weighted coverage can therefore help to treat sleep disorders in your children from 3 years of age, especially by the fact that it simulates a hug, thanks to its very enveloping character. Be careful to make good use of it.

Support for children with special needs

In addition to being useful to people with sleep problems, you can also consider heavy coverage for children with specific needs. The lean duvet can be used for children with ADHD (attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity), restless leg syndrome, or autism spectrum disorder,as Kelly Champinot points out. The cocoon effect makes it easier for them to let go and fall into sleep.

Faced with your tormented sleep nights, the heavy duvet makes the weight!
